The history of Andros

Spring in Andros IslandOf course, it is not possible to know a place without learning a few things about its history and past. There are two main myths about how the island of Andros got its name. According to the first, about 3,000 years ago, the union of Apollo with Reo gave birth to Anios, who became king of Delos. In time, the king had two sons, Andros and Mykonos, from whom the homonymous islands took their names.

According to the second legend, the name of the island is due to General Andros who went to the island during the Minoan period. Of course, there are many references to the island with various names derived from its natural beauties.

History of Andros

During the Byzantine era and specifically in the 12th century, Andros was transformed into a centre for the export of silk and cobwebs to the West. After the Fall of Constantinople by the Franks, the island fell to the Venetian lot. Several castles were built at that time in order to protect the inhabitants from pirates, with the better known being the Lower Castle of today’s Chora.

In 1566 the island fell into the hands of the Ottomans, however, due to its privileged treatment, it managed to secure financial prosperity and develop its shipping. In 1821 and specifically on May 10, Theofilos Kairis started the revolution and the modern history of Andros began.
